Industrial Scale Calibration, What You Need To Know

industrial scale calibration

Farms, banks and your local post office all have one thing in common: They rely on numbers.

These businesses and many others rely on accurate weighing systems day in, day out. And heavy use (and in some cases, misuse) can lead to scales throwing up numbers that leave you scratching your head and while thinking … “wait a minute, this CAN’T be right?”

When left unchecked and untested for too long, malfunctioning scales can put your business at risk. Everything from undercharging for excess product, overcharging for underfilling, penalties for not adhering to approved weight regulations, and wasting production and manufacturing resources.

Why you need to have your scales tested regularly

No scale is immune to perfect working order. Even the most expensive well-engineered scales succumb to the wear and tear of everyday use. Because of this, scales tolerances being to slip. And without the upkeep or general servicing, you can soon find your scales causing quality issues, scrapped batches, and in extreme cases—product recall.

It happens.

But, it doesn’t have too.

How Calibration Works

In its most simple form, a standard or certified mass is placed on your scale. The reading is recorded. If the reading matches the applied standard no adjustment is needed. So, you’re good to go. If the reading does not match the tolerance, then the scale requires calibration.

However, not all scales are this straight forward and easy to calibrate. Industrial and commercial scales and instruments require a different approach. Why? Because the performance of these scales can be affected by:

  • Surface level;
  • Condition of scale feet;
  • Ambient temperature; and,
  • Tolerance range (also known as span).

Thus, when it comes to commercial and industrial weighing instruments, a more thorough investigation and process of elimination method is needed to gain scale accuracy.

Here’s what comes next

After your scales are tested and calibrated, it’s likely you will have some questions.

Everything from…

How often do I need to calibrate?

Do my new scales need calibration?

How do I find out if my scale is Legal-for-Trade?

And at Anmar, we are here to help you make an informed decision. So, let’s start at the top.

How often do I need to calibrate?

Calibration frequency depends on a few factors—manufacturer’s recommendation, usage rates, environment (including temperate), and how important exact weight is to your business. And because every business is different, there are no one-size-fits-all answers.

For instance, if your scales are under heavy use throughout the day and weak, they are more prone to wear and tear and misreadings. In this case, a monthly calibration and weekly spot checks would be ideal to ensure proper scale performance and longevity.

Ultimately, it comes down to your business needs. If you’re unsure about what’s best for your business, click here, one of our expert technicians will be happy to guide you.

Do new scales need calibration?

Yes, here’s why.

Every scale you purchase will come calibrated from the factory. But this doesn’t mean the scale its 100% accurate. The reason behind this is, the scale was calibrated in a different environment to the one you will be using it in. Which means—at the time of calibration everything from the elevation through to the temperature can throw out scale readings.

So, to avoid future setbacks and headaches with your new scales, it’s best to have an on-site calibration before use. This ensures optimal performance and accuracy as soon as you put it to use.

How do I find out if my scale is Legal-for-Trade?

Scales purchase for commercial use require a Legal-for-Trade or ‘Trade Ready’ certificate. This means the scale needs to be tested and verified in accordance with the National Measurement Act 1960.

Does This Apply To Me?

If your scales are used for commercial purposes, then yes, you are required to hold a Legal-for-Trade certificate. So whether you weigh parcels in a Post Office, count coins in a bank or weigh strawberries for a punnet, your scales need to be certified.

And much like your business depends on accurate performance and high standards, it’s equally important to find a calibration and servicing company you can depend on.
